How do I know if I need to replace my Double Glazing?

How do I know if I need to replace my Double Glazing?

Even good quality glazing doesn’t last forever; quality of materials, installation, where the windows are situated and local weather can all impact their useful lifespan. Double glazing technology has also improved over recent years: it’s worth investing in state-of-the-art windows if you want to improve the energy efficiency of your home. But how will you know if it’s time to replace your windows? Look out for these telltale signs:

Windows have condensation
If condensation between the panes is making it difficult to see through your windows, this is a sign that the double glazing unit has broken down. Unfortunately, the condensation will only get worse over time. Eventually, energy-saving properties will deteriorate to that of a single glazed window.

Window frames are yellowing
First generation PVCu windows of old were vulnerable to yellowing over time; however, manufacturing developments, including new additives to the PVCu, means this is no longer a problem in new windows.

Windows aren't soundproofing your home
If you can hear passing traffic or noise from your neighbours when you're inside your house with the windows shut, this indicates your windows are no longer fitting correctly and may need replacing. Modern windows can make your home a peaceful place to be, significantly improving your quality of life.

Window frames are rotting
Without careful maintenance, wooden framed windows can rot, decay and suffer insect damage over time. If you've inherited a poorly maintained property, or just don't have time to commit to routine work, gaps can form in the wood, causing leaks and drafts. These are a sure sign of deterioration and windows must be treated or replaced immediately as their performance will only worsen over time.

Windows don't open or close properly
Wooden frames can warp and become difficult to open and close over time. Likewise, old uPVC windows with poor quality or ill-maintained hinges can get jammed. This is not only irritating when you want to let in fresh air, but also dangerous should you have an emergency and need to escape. Furthermore, if windows don’t open or close properly, it's likely they're not secure and pose a security risk.

Windows are letting in a draft
PVCu windows have come a long way since the first-generation designs of the 1980s when energy efficiency was much lower.  If you're noticing draft in your home, this is a sure sign that old weather seals have deteriorated, meaning windows need replacing.
