CRK security: improve your home security

CRK Security

Home security and safety is something we all need, to feel comfortable in our homes. But as the evenings get darker earlier and opportunistic burglars look to target homes filled with Christmas presents, security becomes even more important.

This article takes a look at the reasons you should upgrade the security of your windows and doors, as well as some of the factors that put homes at the biggest risk of burglaries.

When to upgrade your windows and doors for security

There are many times that people will look to enhance the security of their windows and doors. For some, there may be a sudden issue, such as a problem with a locking mechanism, or a broken window that makes them an easy target. For others, having outdated doors and windows may mean that their homes are more likely to be targeted, due to wear and tear causing weaknesses that can be exploited.

Whenever you feel that the strength and safety of a window or door has been compromised, it is time to upgrade, as investing in solving the issue can be a lot less costly than a break-in.

Common entry points for burglars

It won’t come as a surprise that some of the easiest ways for people to gain access to someone’s home include through windows and doors.

Here are the most common entry points for burglars.

  1. Front door

The front door is the most common way that burglars gain access to a home, with 74% entering this way. Of these break-ins, 29% of these happen when the lock is forced. This makes it essential to have a front door that you can trust to keep unwanted visitors at bay.

  1. Back doors and patio doors

The second most common entry point for thieves is through a home’s back door. These are typically out of sight, and older, less secure versions of these doors can make it easier to break in by smashing glass, or breaking a low-security lock.

  1. Windows

Windows are another way that many burglars get into homes, by smashing glass, getting in by breaking weak locks, or even through those that aren’t closed at all.

  1. Gates

Side gates can be easily climbed over, or even walked through if they are not locked. This can provide easy access for burglars to enter the less visible parts of the home and find an entry point.

  1. Garage doors

Garage doors are another way that burglars can gain access to a home, particularly if there is not a locked door between the garage and the home itself. Once inside a garage, this provides cover for unwanted visitors to break their way into a home, so this is another point to consider.

How to improve home safety

The easiest way to improve home safety is to be aware of potential entry points in your home, check the security of your existing windows and doors, and make improvements when required, before anybody is able to try to get in.

Top tips include:

  1. Keep windows and doors locked when not in use, even if you’re home
  2. Invest in quality doors and windows
  3. Carry out maintenance when needed on windows and doors
  4. Consider the areas that are less visible to passers by and make sure these are protected
