Why is there condensation inside my windows?

Condensation inside my windows

This article takes a look at one of the common problems that many old windows face… condensation between the panes.

By the time you have finished reading, you should know how to solve any problems that you face with your windows.

Why does condensation form inside windows?

Condensation forms between window panes when the seal between the panes is broken. This means that air is able to enter the space, causing a significant temperature difference. The result of this is condensation appearing inside the window itself.

Why is there condensation inside my windows?

Why is condensation a problem?

When you spot condensation between the panes of your window, it means the glazing unit is no longer performing to the standard it should be. If moisture is getting between the panes, it means air will be too.

When a unit is no longer sealed, the efficiency drops significantly, resulting in increased energy costs. It also can worsen, allowing moisture into the home and preventing the windows from insulating sound.

What to do if you have condensation between window panes

If you find that you have condensation between window panes, this means the unit itself has deteriorated to the point that it is no longer functioning properly. Because of this, the best option is to either have the seals on the windows replaced, or replace the window entirely.

Other common problems with windows

There are many other issues that can occur with windows, which we will take a look at in more detail now.

Condensation on windows

This is when condensation builds on windows, rather than inside the unit. This is typically caused by damp air, or poor ventilation. There are windows available that include vents, helping to maintain good air circulation and reduce the likelihood of damp and condensation forming around windows.

Cracked windows

Cracked windows are another way that glazing units become compromised. This can be a result of damage, poor quality glass, improper installation or changes in temperature. Even if the crack is only on one of the panes, this will prevent the double glazing from insulating effectively, as well as potentially letting moisture in and compromising security. When this happens, it is best to speak to an expert about your replacement options.

Broken locks

Broken locks are another common issue, with windows either not closing, or not locking. When this happens, it’s important to resolve the issue, to prevent it becoming a home security risk.

Draughts

Another common issue that can happen with windows is feeling a draught coming through. This is a sign that the fitting or insulation has failed. If this happens, the first step is to identify where the draught is coming from, as it could be from the window itself, or around the edges of the window unit if there is a gap.
